The History of 710
July 8, 2024
710 is an industry-wide inside joke that celebrates cannabis concentrates. Take 710, spin it upside down, and there you have it- ‘OIL’. Cannabis has made way on this day to dedicate it to all things extract and ‘oil’. While it’s certainly not as prominent as 420, 710 is still a hugely popular celebration in the cannabis community.
One of the first large gatherings on 710 for the community started over a decade ago in 2012 with Colorado’s 710 cup. There were celebrations prior to 2012, but Colorado helped pave the way with a publicized and dedicated 710 cup. From there, 710 rose to prominence with a parallel trajectory as its’ partnered product categories- extracts and vape.
As more states came online with regulated cannabis industries, more and more consumers started dabbling with dabs. The first generation of cannabis concentrate consumers had extremely limited resources for both accessing and consuming concentrates. Many consumers had to process their own concentrates by taking hair straighteners and pressing flower for rosin with parchment paper. Prior to the rise of dab rigs and torches, OG users would have to consume using a (potentially dangerous) process of heating butter knives over a stove top burner.
With the rise in interest in concentrates, accessories have stepped up to simplify consumption. Household concentrate vaporizer, Puffco, started in 2013 and released their cornerstone product, the Puffco Peak, in 2016. Since then, they have continued to provide users with one of the most sleek and tech-forward devices for consumption.
With technological advancements in accessories and growing interest in extracts, the cannabis community has opened up more and more to the world of concentrates. In 2022, MJBizDaily reported that “vapor pens were the second-largest category by revenue behind flower in the U.S. cannabis market during 2020 and 2021”.
As we approach the 2024 season of 710, vapes and concentrates are everywhere. Dab tools are handed out as freely as lighters and rolling papers at events and shops are carrying bongs that can double as dab rigs. One of the biggest areas of opportunity, however, is ensuring dispensary staff is trained to address concentrate questions from customers. That’s why we added a dedicated entry to our budtender series all about talking to customers about concentrates.
